Caesar does not only fight Gauls. He fights the version of himself that Rome will be allowed to remember.
Each year a new book of the Commentaries arrives. They are cool, precise, and slightly unbelievable. Rivers are crossed. Hostages are taken. Mercy is advertised, then withdrawn on schedule.
The Senate hears numbers. The people hear a hero. Both are useful.
